§ 21-125. Construction specifications for sidewalks.

  • (a)

    Concrete specifications—Sidewalks without driveways.

    (1)

    Three thousand five hundred (3,500) psi.

    (2)

    Expansion joint every fifty (50) feet.

    (3)

    Control joints every five (5) feet.

    (4)

    Non-skid surface (i.e., broom finish).

    (5)

    Curb ramps for disabled access shall be provided in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

    (6)

    A minimum slump of four (4) inches and a maximum of five (5) inches is recommended.

    (7)

    The minimum width shall be as originally constructed or as determined by the city engineer.

    (8)

    Minimum depth shall be four (4) inches.

    (b)

    Concrete specifications—Sidewalks across driveways; over storm sewers or other openings.

    (1)

    Three thousand five hundred (3,500) psi.

    (2)

    Expansion joint every five (50) feet.

    (3)

    Control joints every five (5) feet.

    (4)

    Non-skid surface (i.e., broom finish).

    (5)

    Curb ramps for disabled access shall be provided in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

    (6)

    A minimum slump of four (4) inches and a maximum of five (5) inches is recommended.

    (7)

    The minimum width shall be as originally constructed or as determined by the city engineer.

    (8)

    Minimum depth shall be six (6) inches.

    (9)

    Reinforcement as required by the city engineer, such as wire mesh, steel rebar, or steel plating.

    (c)

    Specifications for concrete and clay brick pavers.

    (1)

    Concrete pavers shall be hydraulically pressed concrete of not less than eight thousand (8,000) psi.

    (2)

    A minimum of a three-inch layer of concrete sand shall be used as base material.

    (3)

    Clean, coarse, concrete sand shall be used as joint fill between the pavers.

    (4)

    Pavers shall be tamped and leveled with a mechanical vibrator until units are firmly bedded.

    (5)

    After first vibration, sand shall be added to surface and vibrated into joints. Re-cover joints with additional sand until finn joints are achieved.

    (6)

    All pavers shall meet gradient and elevation requirements.

    (7)

    All pavers shall meet requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

    (d)

    Specifications for sawed limestone, stone slab, or marble slab sidewalks.

    (1)

    Stone, limestone, or marble slabs shall only be accepted or approved for sidewalk materials when it is necessary to preserve the historical significance of the abutting property; and when it is necessary to replace existing stone slab sidewalks that have been damaged or destroyed which will not meet any and all applicable city codes.

    (2)

    If a stone slab surface exists, and approved for construction or replacement, it must be replaced with stone which will substantially conform in color, texture, and thickness and width to the stone slab surfaces which were removed or immediately adjoined the repaired or replaced public sidewalk (in order to retain the ambiance of the sawed limestone or marble slab sidewalks). If a stone surface has become so smooth that a slick walking surface results, the stone surface must be re-textured, sand blasted, or pressure washed, in order to eliminate any and all existing hazards.

    (e)

    Sidewalk width.

    (1)

    The minimum width of sidewalks in residential subdivisions shall be four (4) feet, except where otherwise approved, based on the proximity of the sidewalk to the roadway, the volume and speed of traffic, expected number of pedestrians or other safety factors.

    (2)

    The minimum width of sidewalks in commercial subdivisions shall be six (6) feet, except where otherwise approved, based on the proximity of the sidewalk to the roadway, the volume and speed of traffic, expected number of pedestrians or other safety factors.
